Grapevine
We call this section GRAPEVINE because Stantum is headquartered in Bordeaux, France, known worldwide for the Bordeaux variety wine. The way we've been using the word in Touch Point reflects how our customers first learned about our multi-touch technology. In this edition, the word grapevine connotes growth and the ways Onda Communication will use Stantum's multi-touch technology in their products.
About Onda Communication
An Italian OEM established in 2003, Onda Communication provides GPRS, EDGE, UMTS and HSPDA phones, as well as HSPDA cards and modules, to such leading carriers as TIM, Telecom Italia and BT. In 2009, Onda released Alfred, a 10.2-inch CES Award-winning tablet with a user-friendly access to web surfing, chatting, reading news, listening to music, call at any time, and access to all services offered by carriers.
Why did Onda choose Stantum's technology?
We wanted to add multi-touch functionality in an upcoming revision Alfred 2 without a complete redesign. Among the technologies we have evaluated, Stantum's was the only one offering a great multi-touch quality with handwriting input at the right cost.
How successful was the integration?
Very successful, especially since Stantum's digital resistive technology is immune to EMI issues. Since Alfred features Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and broadband connectivity, fine-tuning a capacitive touch screen for this device would have been time consuming and could end up in degraded touch performances.
What are Onda's expectations for the tablet market?
We strongly believe that tablets are a new class of devices that will fuel the need for straightforward user experiences and news usages such as home entertainment, remote controlling and media consuming. The new touch-friendly user interfaces enable both experts and beginners to enjoy computing. It opens up great prospects for the future.
